Letter to the editor:

Torture is a blemish on America

Wed, Dec 31, 2014 (2 a.m.)

The report on the torture committed by America and released by the Senate turned my stomach. My mother and aunt worked for the Czech underground in WWII, and some of the methods the CIA used on prisoners were used on my family by the Gestapo. America now has its own Heinrich Himmlers and Adolf Eichmans.

I voted for Barack Obama in 2008, and a month after his inauguration, I sent him a letter saying John Yoo, the architect of the torture memos used by George W. Bush and Dick Cheney to justify torture, should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity. Obama repudiated the memos, but this was not enough.

Watching Bush frantically back-pedaling on MSNBC by repeating, “It was legal,” made me sick. He looked like a coward with no moral compass. I know Cheney doesn’t have one because he keeps repeating that he doesn’t regret anything he did.

I don’t believe the torture prevented any attacks on the United States. America has now been defiled with filth that will never be washed away.
