UNLV and UNR will play the Battle for the Fremont Cannon in the regular-season finale for the first time since 1977, it was announced today.
The Mountain West released its full slate of games today, and the big change for UNLV was moving its rivalry game from the middle of the season to the end, on Nov. 29. That’s where Rebels coach Bobby Hauck has always wanted it.
“I am very excited that the rivalry game is at the end of the season,” Hauck said in a news release. “That’s where it should be.”
The cannon is currently painted red after UNLV's first victory in the series since 2004.
This is the second season of a two-year rotation for the league’s 12 teams, which means the Rebels will play the same eight Mountain West opponents as the 2013 season.
The Rebels will open league play with back-to-back road trips to San Diego State (Sept. 27) and San Jose State (Oct. 4). The rest of the schedule includes away games at Utah State (Oct. 24) and Hawaii (Nov. 22), as well as home games against Fresno State (Oct. 11), New Mexico (Nov. 1), Air Force (Nov. 8) and UNR.
Next year, the Rebels will still play the other five members of the West division (UNR, Fresno State, SDSU, Hawaii and San Jose State) but will switch to the other trio of Mountain division teams. That means two seasons of games against Boise State, Colorado State and Wyoming.
The second Mountain West Championship game will be played on Dec. 6 at the site of the higher-ranked team.
