letter to the editor:

Tax businesses to help our schools

Sat, Feb 22, 2014 (2:01 a.m.)

How long should the citizens of Nevada have to wait for the governor, the Legislature or business leaders of our state to do something about some of the worst per pupil funding and largest class sizes in the nation? Is 54 years enough?

Study after study has come to the conclusion that Nevada schools are poorly funded and that Nevada’s tax structure should be changed. Studies in 1960, 1966, 1988, 1990 and 2002 and Gov. Kenny Guinn called for a broad-based business tax, yet 54 years later we are still waiting.

No new taxes no matter what. Wyoming, Nevada and South Dakota are the only states that have no corporate income tax, according to the taxfoundation.org website.

International corporations with billions in profits are not paying their fair share for doing business in our state, yet Nevadans pay the eighth-highest state sales tax.

What possible reason could the most powerful people in Nevada have for not wanting to tax out-of-state mining companies or Wal-Mart, whose owners are four of the richest 10 people in our country?

Is it too much ask the business leaders in our community who have training, education and experience in economics and business to come up with a fair way to fund the education of the children of Nevada? Give us an alternative to 54 years of stalling and just saying no.

Please do not let them off the hook for another 54 years; demand an alternative. If not this, then what? If not now, then when? If they do not give us an alternative, then there is only one choice. We cannot continue to neglect our children.
