How’s this for winter? 70 degrees in Las Vegas

Thu, Jan 16, 2014 (3:56 p.m.)

Spring doesn’t officially arrive until April, but Las Vegas today registered its first official 70-degree reading of the year.

The National Weather Service in Las Vegas said the temperature reached 70 degrees shortly before 3 p.m. at McCarran International Airport, the official recording station in Las Vegas. In downtown Las Vegas the mercury hit an unofficial 74 degrees, the NWS reported.

Strong high pressure is treating the region to dry and mild conditions, which are expected to continue through the weekend and into next week, according to forecasters.

This afternoon’s reading marked the first time since Nov. 15 that temperatures in Las Vegas reached 70, according to the weather service’s twitter feed. The reading fell 3 degrees short of a record for January. The warmest January reading in Las Vegas history was 73 degrees, recorded in 1976.
