CARSON CITY β A vote lowering the basic service charge for NV Energy customers in Northern Nevada turned out to be a hollow victory after the utility said it would raise its fee for electricity to make up the difference.
The state Public Utilities Commission voted 2-1 earlier this week to lower a previous increase in the basic service charge from $17.50 to $15.25 a month for some 210,000 residential customers.
But Faye Anderson, a spokeswoman for utility, said the decrease would be offset by an increase in the per-kilowatt-hour fee for electricity.
βItβs a matter of collecting the same amount of revenue but just differing amounts from different buckets,β she said.
The hike, increasing the average power bill by 3 percent, took effect Jan. 1.
