Metro Police plan home visits to suspected gang members

Tue, Jun 3, 2014 (8:26 a.m.)

Las Vegas police say gang crime investigators are going to begin making house calls to identify and confirm suspected juvenile gang members.

The department says adults suspected of being gang members or affiliates can expect to get notice by mail advising them of their status.

Police say the policy change announced Monday also allows for people to dispute and appeal reports of gang membership or affiliation.

The changes follow meetings between police, prosecutors, American Civil Liberties Union and involved community members about establishing a way to correct mistakes and appeal gang designation.

Police posted a YouTube video about the policy.

The department says the goal is to create an accurate record of gang membership and help investigators curb criminal gang activity through enforcement, community outreach and education.
