A motorcyclist died Friday evening after striking two cars on U.S. 95 in Henderson, law enforcement officials said.

The accident occurred at about 6 p.m. just north of Horizon Drive, said Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Loy Hixson.

The driver, a male, was traveling northbound and speeding in the left lane when he hit the back of a Lincoln Navigator, Hixson said. The motorcycle and its rider were then thrown to the right where they hit the side of a truck.

The truck veered to the left where it hit the median, while the bike and its rider slid down the right shoulder of the freeway, where the bike caught fire.

The driver of the motorcycle died at the scene before authorities arrived.

The passenger of the truck was taken to University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The two passengers of the Navigator were unharmed.

The Regional Transportation Commission said northbound U.S. 95 at Horizon Drive remains closed as of 7:30 p.m. and that drivers should use other routes and expect major delays.

Traffic is currently being diverted west onto Horizon Ridge and east to Boulder Highway.
