Companies that don’t invest in their people (child care, education and health care), update their equipment or innovate (green energy, science and infrastructure) fail.
Reading a lot of newspaper editorials lately, I feel like I am reading America’s obituary. As we dance around thinking we’re No. 1, the world is passing us by. Depending on the study, the U.S. is 27th-39th in education, about 25th in transportation and infrastructure, about 37th in health care outcomes (No. 1 in costs) and about 16th in the Social Progress Index (Canada’s middle class is now better off).
Soon we will be the second-largest economy next to China, which really does not mean much when the masses are not benefiting from the wealth — just look at Wall Street vs. wage stagnation, increasing productivity numbers, high unemployment, poverty and the middle-class decline. America is dying.
The can-do spirit that brought settlers to our shores and held off Adolf Hitler in World War II is gone.
How do we survive? No. 1: Realize we’re dying. No. 2: Pay attention! When you see a political ad on TV, you should know whether it is true or not. We need to get money out of politics, but money only works if people are uninformed. No. 3: Do not vote unless you believe No. 1 and follow No. 2.
Let’s hope it’s not too late to save this once-great nation.
