Election betting proposal nixed by legislative panel

CARSON CITY — A proposal to allow betting in Nevada on federal elections has failed to garner the support of a legislative panel.

Democratic state Sen. Tick Segerblom of Las Vegas had hoped to persuade an interim study committee on technology and gambling to sponsor a bill for consideration by the 2015 Legislature.

But the effort failed by lack of a motion at the committee's final meeting Tuesday.

A similar proposal to allow pari-mutuel wagering on elections for president, U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives died in the 2013 session.

Segerblom has said election betting could be a boon for state gambling revenues.

But Republican Sen. Greg Brower of Reno said something as important as elections should not the subject of wagering.
