A man who police say robbed two women at Town Square is dead after a shootout Friday night with officers at Interstate 15 and Sahara Avenue, according to Metro Police.

The women were walking to a parking structure around 8:15 p.m. on the south side of Town Square when a man demanded their purses, Capt. Matt McCarthy said.

The man ran off with the purses, and as he fled the women and a security officer heard what they believed to be a gunshot, McCarthy said.

Police tracked the suspect via one of the women’s cellphones and pinpointed him near Tropicana Avenue and Dean Martin Drive, he said.

The man was driving so erratically though that officers stopped pursuing him, McCarthy said.

Officers picked the chase back up when they located the suspect near I-15 and Sahara, he said.

At that point, the man turned from the freeway and onto Sahara, headed eastbound, and crossed into westbound traffic. The man subsequently collided with a vehicle, McCarthy said.

Officers called out orders to the suspect after the crash, but the man pulled out a handgun and opened fire, he said.

Officers shot back and fatally wounded the man, he said.

The two people in the wreck involving the suspect were transported to a hospital, treated and released, he said.

The investigation is in the early stages and remains ongoing, McCarthy said.
