Teams in high school football’s Division I Sunset Region begin league play tonight, meaning we likely will be flooded with lopsided final scores and games ending by the mercy rule of a running clock.
For the past five seasons the same four teams in the Sunset — Arbor View, Bishop Gorman, Centennial and Palo Verde — have each advanced to the regional semifinals. The league’s other teams, with the exception of Legacy, have struggled to fight back against the powers. The four have high enrollment numbers to build their program and other resources struggling teams desperately lack.
One look at tonight’s games is enough ammunition needed for a change. Arbor View plays Desert Oasis, Centennial takes on Bonanza, and Bishop Gorman opens local play at Shadow Ridge.
In the Sunrise Region, where five-time Sunrise champion Liberty is again the team to beat after scoring 51 first-half points last night to defeat Green Valley, teams are playing in their final tuneup before league play next week.
The games of note include: Coronado at Las Vegas, Silverado at Basic and Canyon Springs at Foothill.
In the Division I-A, Spring Valley and Mojave meet in what is expected to be the most competitive game of the night.
