For the third straight game, Durango put together one stellar half of football.
It’s the other halves that have doomed the Trailblazers to an 0-3 start. Durango fell to Mar Vista (California) 21-6 at home Friday night despite blanking the out-of-state foe throughout the second half.
“I told our kids I was happy with them for how they played for two quarters,” Durango coach Matt Gerber said. “We’re an inexperienced team, but we’re going to get better. We’re going to learn.”
Durango returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the first half, but it was called back for a penalty. The Trailblazers couldn’t find the end zone again until the third quarter when quarterback Jonathan Schofield scored on a scramble.
Schofield and running back Leontre Austin each finished with around 50 rushing yards.
“(Austin) was a shoestring away from breaking a couple big ones, but that’s the way our season is going,” Gerber said. “We’re hopeful and will continue to battle.”
