Before his Silverado High football team took the field tonight, Skyhawks coach Randall Cunningham told them to expect a close game against visiting Palo Verde.

He anticipated the game would go into overtime. A few hours later, the score was even at seven at the end of regulation — Cunningham’s prediction came true.

“Who is going to pull it out when we get to overtime?” Cunningham, the former NFL quarterback, asked players before the game. “When we get to overtime, I brought the kids together again and said, ‘Guys we are at that point now.’”

Silverado prevailed 13-7 on Devion Clayton’s touchdown reception from Micah Weber.

“Our kids played their hearts out tonight,” Cunningham said. “Palo Verde is a very, very good football team.”

Weber's touchdown run of about 90 yards in the first half gave Silverado a 7-0 lead at halftime. Palo Verde’s Christian Bell scored on a 5-yard run in the second half to tie the score.

It’s the second straight week Palo Verde (1-3) has lost in overtime.
