A suspected burglar was shot and killed during a confrontation with a property manager today in the southeast valley, according to Metro Police.

First responders were dispatched shortly before 3 p.m. to the 4500 block of Viking Road, near Boulder Highway and Flamingo Road, Metro Lt. Dan McGrath said.

Also according to McGrath:

A locksmith called the property managers, a man and his wife who have Concealed Carry Weapons permits.

The couple showed up to the house with a big dog. They went to the front of the house and then the backyard.

Once in the backyard, they encountered a man, only described as being in his 20s.

The investigation was in its preliminary stage this afternoon.

The man drew his weapon and gave commands to the assailant. That is when the assailant attacked the man, striking him multiple times in the face. He also hit the dog.

At some point during the fist fight, the property owner retrieved his weapon and shot the assailant once.

The man later died at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

Police are trying to find out if the man was a squatter or a burglar.

The sequence of events seems to be consistent with the evidence police have found, which includes a backpack with tools that are known to be used in break-ins. Also, the shooter has injuries consistent with being attacked.

Detectives were still conducting interviews this afternoon and the shooting remains under investigation.

Alejandro Aguilar, 45, lives a few houses down from where the shooting occurred. He told the Sun that in the five years he and his family have lived there, their house was burglarized once and someone had attempted to break in another time. He is not aware of specific crime in the neighborhood, but said that it isn't unusual to hear sirens.

The man killed will be identified by the Clark County coroner's office at a later time.
