The Nevada System of Higher Education has ended a 10-year-old program that sought to develop Nevada's health care workforce and encourage research.
Officials announced Friday that they phased out the Health Sciences System last month. They praised the program's accomplishments but noted it's a natural transition because UNLV's new medical school is about to open.
The program had four employees based in Las Vegas. One was reassigned and three are no longer employed with the system.
The higher education organization will save $382,000 a year by ending the program. Funding originally came from private sources, but was later funded in part by state funds.
Board of Regents Chairman Rick Trachok said the activities performed by program officials will now be spearheaded by individual colleges rather than a central organization.
