HILO, Hawaii — Big Island police say an officer shot and killed a man and a pit bull. They identified the man as 25-year-old Kalyp Allen Rapoza of Hilo.

Police say the officer was responding to a disturbance report Monday afternoon at a Hilo home. Police say the officer encountered a man wielding a knife and a pit bull that had earlier chased paramedics into their vehicle.

The officer fired several shots, killing the man and the dog.

The department says there will be criminal and administrative investigations into the shootings. They've ordered an autopsy for Rapoza. A necropsy will be conducted to determine what caused the pit bull to die.

The officer who fired the shots has been with the department for three years. He's been placed on administrative leave.
