2016 Kobalt 400: The Scene

There are numerous ways to spend money during NASCAR weekend at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Here’s how to burn through $100 on a day at the track.

The fastest way is buying a race uniform jacket that costs at least that. I’ve never worn one, but they look stiff and not all that comfortable; drivers likely wear them only for their flame-retardant qualities. Here’s a much slower, and more enjoyable, way to spend that Benjamin.

Cocktail in LVMS souvenir cup: $17

Drivers, start your engines. Nothing gets race day jump-started like a cocktail in the Neon Garage.

The bar serves cocktails for $11, but you might as well spend the extra $6 for the souvenir cup. You get more alcohol, and you can sip from your LVMS cup while you watch live entertainment before the race.

Seat pad: $10

The average NASCAR race lasts more than three hours. The metal benches that tower over the track aren’t comfortable.

At all.

So spend the $10 on the way into the stadium and you’ll be thanking yourself 400 laps later.

Burger: $11

Race day can be as much about the fantastic foods as it is the cars on the track. LVMS has concessions as far as the eye can see, each with a culinary creation more distinctive than the last.

“The food is excellent,” said Mark Russell, who is at his first NASCAR race all the way from Swan River in Manitoba — more than 2,500 miles away. “Everywhere in Vegas the food selection has been good, but here it’s even better.”

Burgers with names such as the Magic Mushroom, Holy Moly Guac-A-Mole, The Smokin’ Cow, the Prov-O-Lone Ranger and the Hot-to-Trot Gobble Gobble Burger are the norm in the Neon Garage.

“The burgers are delicious and certainly different from what we’re used to,” said Mark’s wife, Rony. “They definitely do food right.”

If you’re more of a hot dog person, LVMS has gems such as the Frito Pie Dog and the Big Kids Dog, smothered in mac and cheese.

You can also opt for the Busch Brothers Beer Braised Nachos, which are nearly as delicious as they are difficult to say. The crispy chips are drowned in beef brisket, caramelized bacon, cheese and jalapeños.

Chili Chili Bang Bang Fries: $10

Nothing goes better with the speedway’s extravagant burgers than a basket of French fries covered in spicy chili, melted cheese, diced red onions and jalapeños.

Soda: $5

Good luck stuffing your face with all of that crazy cuisine without a drink to wash it down.

NASCAR T-shirt: $20

The shirts in the concessions range from $18-$20. You can go with a simple Las Vegas Motor Speedway shirt or choose one to rep your favorite driver. Either way it is a practical souvenir for your day at the races.

NASCAR hat: $18

Like the shirts, hats can be strictly speedway-related or can have logos from the sport’s most popular drivers. And it’s generally not a bad idea to have a hat bill to shade your face from the Las Vegas sun while sitting in it for three hours.

Draft beer: $9

Somewhere around lap 100 or 200, you’ll be thirsty again. The concessions have a wide variety of brewed beverages to quench your mid-race thirst.
