Week 1 ruled
Las Vegas Sun sports editors Ray Brewer and Case Keefer recap a particularly memorable week 1 in Las Vegas high school football that included Bishop Gorman obliterated a Texas power and two games between top five teams that came down to the final minute.

The first 42 minutes of the battle for North town rivalry game between Canyon Springs and Cheyenne were relatively calm.
The last six were crazy, and culminated with Canyon Springs driving more than 90 yards in less than 50 seconds for a 28-22 victory. Diamante Burton threw a game-winning 16-yard touchdown pass to Keyon White in the final seconds.
“It was just one of those games where you just never knew what was going to happen,” Canyon Springs assistant Hamlet McNeace said. “Best game I’ve been in in a long time.”
Burton finished with more than 220 all-purpose yards, and three touchdowns for the Pioneers while Jayvion Pugh had more than 100 yards rushing.
Cheyenne took its first lead at 16-14 with a safety midway through the fourth quarter. Canyon Springs answered by driving to inside of the 5-yard line, but turned the ball over on downs.
Burton eventually found the end zone with a passing touchdown to go up 21-16, but the lead lasted only a couple minutes. Cheyenne scored with 58 seconds left, and pinned Canyon Springs deep in its own territory.
But Burton, a running back only playing quarterback because of an injury, stayed composed, and hit a couple big plays to get into position for the Pioneers to notch the game-winning touchdown.
"Diamante put this team on his back and led us," Canyon Springs coach Gus McNair said. "I can't say enough about his mentality and attitude."
