Bonanza running back Ricardo Hill ran for more than 250 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead the Bengals to a 42-8 drubbing of the Western Warriors Friday night.
Hill ran in three touchdowns in the first half to get the Bengals out to a 28-8 halftime lead.
“Basically we just wanted to get him in the flow,” Bonanza coach Dion Lee said. “In the first game he only carried the ball seven times and that wasn’t enough. We need to get him the ball at least 20 to 25 times.”
Bonanza cruised in the second half, and Hill caught a touchdown from quarterback Cannon Reid in the fourth quarter to close the game out.
The 34 points is the biggest margin of victory for Bonanza in four years.
“It definitely builds up confidence and builds belief in the system that we have installed as new coaches,” Lee said. “It’s teaching these kids how to win.”
The win moves the Bengals to 1-1 and they will face Durango, who has jumped out to a surprising 2-0 start, next Friday.
“The players are working together as a unit and not pointing the finger at each other,” Lee said. “That’s one of the bad habits at Bonanza that we’ve had to break since I got here and I think we are turning the corner.”
