Locked in a defensive battle, Virgin Valley coach Yori Ludvigson was looking for any way to get the ball into the end zone.
Midway through the second quarter, Cesar Zarate lined up to punt the ball to Mojave but noticed something in the Rattlers' punt return formation.
The senior kept the ball and ran it 58 yards for what would eventually be the game-winning touchdown.
“We have it set up so that if we see a certain thing it’s automatically a fake. Half of my staff thinks I’m crazy,” Ludvigson said. “(Zarate) pulled it down and took off with it and ran for awhile.”
Jayden Perkins punched in a score in the second half, and Virgin Valley moved to 2-1 with a 12-0 win over Mojave Friday night.
Perkins finished with 30 carries for 160 yards despite having only 48 yards after three quarters.
“At the end of the third quarter our guys up front just wore them out,” Ludvigson said. “We were able to run the ball and kept pounding it and pounding it.”
Virgin Valley controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, limiting the Rattlers to only five rushing yards.
The Bulldogs will look to extend their win streak to three as they host Western next Friday.
