Letter to the editor:

College should not be a burden

Tue, Sep 13, 2016 (2 a.m.)

In my two years at College of Southern Nevada, I have accrued $4,000 in student loan debt. I have a high GPA, a ton of community organizing and volunteer experience, and a deep love for education. The only thing that holds me back from my dream of attending a major university is knowing I will pay $200,000 to get my master’s degree.

I never expected to make it to college; it wasn’t a realistic goal for the kids in the socio-economic class I’m a part of, but I made it. It doesn’t seem fair that the cost of education is becoming a burden on the American people.

The next president has a responsibility to do something about the outrageous interest rates college students who seek loans have to pay and the price of college in general. We live in a time where you need a college degree to succeed, and it is up to our government to ensure the equality we proudly claim to have as Americans extends into our system of higher education.
