Chaparral established itself as one of the division’s best passing offenses through the first four weeks.
In Week 5 against Del Sol, however, the Cowboys opted to complement their aerial proficiency with a solid rushing attack.
Chaparral running back Jacob Ford rumbled 82 yards on season-high 17 carries with a pair of touchdowns, leading the Cowboys (3-3, 1-0 Sunrise League) to a 34-8 victory over the Dragons (3-2, 0-1) on Friday.
“We know we can pass,” Chaparral coach Paul Nihipali said. “We don’t want to be predictable.”
Quarterback Santiago Vialpando, one of the division’s top passers, had an efficient day. Vialpando went 8 for 11 for 131 yards with a pair of touchdowns. He connected with Kentrell Petite for a 48-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, before finding Devin Gaddy on a 63-yard bomb in the fourth quarter.
“People can’t plan strategy when you know you’re good on the ground as well as the air,” Nihipali said.
Gaddy also included a 33-yard pick-six in the second quarter.
Chaparral travels to Las Vegas High next Friday, while Del Sol visits Boulder City.
