Centennial overcame a slow start and pulled away in the second half of its 48-6 win over Cimarron-Memorial on Friday night.
The Bulldogs led 14-6 at halftime after a sloppy start.
“We just shot ourselves in the foot with penalties,” said Centennial coach Leon Evans. “We had over 100 yards in penalties just on the defensive side of the ball.”
Centennial again relied heavily on Leon’s son Jamaal Evans, who threw for 201 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, and ran for another touchdown.
“We made adjustments up front,” Evans said. “Their defensive front was giving us problems early, but we stopped their running game and cut down on the penalties.”
Kayvon Miller — the team’s leading rusher last year — made his season debut after missing the first three games with an injury. He ran 11 times for 60 yards and a touchdown.
“Having him back is huge,” Evans said. “He is our inspirational leader and when he got going downhill he sparked our offense. Jamaal was a lot more comfortable with him behind him in the backfield.”
After a rough 1-2 start the Bulldogs are now even at 2-2, and 1-0 in league play. They will host Legacy next Friday.
“They are playing very well right now,” Evans said. “They run the ball well and we haven’t stopped it well, so we need to shore up our run defense.”
