It took Cheyenne some time, but the Desert Shields have finally hit their stride.

After an 0-3 start to the season, Cheyenne has followed it up with a big win over Cimarron-Memorial, and a 27-6 victory over Western on Friday night.

“It’s perfect timing,” said defensive coordinator Gerald Robinson. “The win over Cimarron was big because it’s a rivalry game, and winning going into conference was a big confidence boost.”

Corwin Bush carried the ball 14 times for 147 yards and a touchdown as the Desert Shields jumped out to a 21-6 halftime lead.

“We played together as a team better,” Robinson said. “When the going gets tough we learned to band together and not crumble. In those early games we were developing our identity with some young guys on the team. When things go wrong now we stick together.”

With the win Cheyenne is now 1-0 in league play and will take on Pahrump Valley next week.

“We are just excited for conference play,” Robinson said. “We told our players before this game that no matter what happened before, these games count now.”
