After a scoreless first half, the Chaparral Cowboys completed the comeback to win 14-6 on opening night at Bonanza High.
Following its second-straight appearance in the state tournament in 2016, Chaparral lost a lot of key personnel to graduation. Coach Paul Nihipali knew heading into the season he had talent but that it would take time for the team to gel, and that was obvious Friday night.
“It wasn’t how we want to win games, but it was a win so we’ll take it,” Nihipali said.
TyRay Collins led the way on both sides of the ball for the Cowboys, scoring both touchdowns on offense, and intercepting Bonanza three times on defense.
“We still have good players this year, it’s just going to take a little longer to get our chemistry back,” Nihipali said. “We’re so young.”
Sophomore Sheik Fofanah had 80 yards on the ground for Chaparral, who will host Pahrump Valley next week.
