Man wounded in shooting during police chase identified

A man shot by Metro Police on Monday when he allegedly shot at officers after a car chase has been identified through jail booking logs as 38-year-old William Alfredo Chafoya.

Chafoya was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on two counts of assault on a protected person and one count each of possession of a gun with an altered or removed serial number, and disobeying peace officers and endangering other persons or property, jail logs show.

Chafoya and an unidentified woman with him were wounded in the shootout about 7:15 p.m. in the 4600 block of Goldfield Street in North Las Vegas, police said. The woman apparently was hit in the wrist by a round fired by Chafoya, police said.

The incident began about 10 miles away on Welsch Circle, where officers were dispatched for a follow-up investigation of an incident Sunday in which a person riding a bicycle was shot by a man in a maroon Honda.

Officers spotted the car and tried to stop it, but Chafoya took off, leading officers on a pursuit, police said.

Chafoya stopped on Goldfield Street and took off running, turning around and firing two to three rounds toward officers, who returned fire, striking him multiple times, police said.

Chafoya and the woman were taken to University Medical Center, where they were expected to recover, police said.

The officers involved, a trainer and a rookie officer he was guiding, have not yet been identified.
