Michael Lofton had three touchdown runs tonight for the Desert Pines High football team in a 54-12 playoff win against visiting Del Sol.

Desert Pines, the No. 1 seed from the 3A Sunset League and the defending state champion, scored 35 unanswered points to close the game.

“We pulled away in the second half,” Desert Pines coach Tico Rodriguez said. “But the first half was very competitive. Those kids (from Del Sol) came to play.”

Devin McGee and Darnell Washington each also scored for the Jaguars, who advance to face Sunrise Mountain next week in the 3A state quarterfinals. Desert Pines beat Sunrise Mountain 35-7 earlier in the season.

“They have a great defense and that running back (Trayvon) Ward is a special player,” Rodriguez said of Sunrise Mountain.
