Stars’ goalie Ben Bishop pitched a shutout, as Dallas blanked the Golden Knights 3-0 Tuesday night at T-Mobile Arena.
Bishop is the only goaltender in the NHL to start a game against the Golden Knights and not surrender a goal. He stopped 19-of-19 shots during the first meeting on Oct. 6 before leaving the game with an injury, and stopped all 34 attempts Tuesday night.
It was the first time the Golden Knights have been shutout in franchise history, and snapped a five game win streak overall and eight game win streak at home.
Stars’ forward Radek Faksa scored all three of the game’s goals, all in the second period. He opened the scoring 12:55 into the period, then added two more goals only eight seconds apart.
Malcolm Subban played well for the Golden Knights in his first loss of the season, stopping 27-of-30 shots.
Stars lead the Golden Knights 3-0 after the second period
Dallas forward Radek Faksa scored three second-period goals to give the Stars a 3-0 lead heading into the final period at T-Mobile Arena.
Faksa scored 12:55 into the period to break the scoreless tie, then added two more goals only eight seconds apart to give the Stars a commanding three-goal lead.
Golden Knights rookie goaltender Malcolm Subban was spectacular prior to the late scoring barrage. He made an outstanding blocker save on a breakaway by Stars’ leading scorer Tyler Seguin, then recovered to make a glove save on the rebound attempt.
Despite Subban’s effort, Vegas trails big heading into the third period and risk snapping their eight game home win streak.
Scoreless after one period
The Golden Knights and Stars are scoreless after one period of hockey at T-Mobile Arena.
Vegas looks like a completely different team from the season opener when the teams first met in Dallas. The Golden Knights won that game 2-1, but were vastly outplayed throughout.
Tonight, the Golden Knights have looked like the better team through 20 minutes of play, outshooting the Stars 15-10.
Both goaltenders have been solid to this point but haven’t needed to be spectacular.
Emotions are already running high in the scoreless contest, with players having to be separated by the referees after nearly every whistle. Colin Miller and Stars’ forward Gemel Smith were sent to the box for roughing calls after a dust up behind the Golden Knights net.
Pre game
It’s been nearly two months since the season opener.
In their first game in franchise history, the Golden Knights shocked the NHL with a come-from-behind win in Dallas on Oct. 6. The Stars outshot Vegas 46-30 but scored only once, and James Neal netted two third-period goals to win the game in spectacular fashion.
The loss was not only the Stars’ home opener, but the night they celebrated their 25th season in Dallas, and losing to an expansion team wasn’t how they planned it.
Tonight at T-Mobile Arena, the Stars have a chance to extract revenge, but they will need to beat a red-hot Golden Knights squad to do it. Vegas has the longest win streak in the NHL with five straight victories and has won eight straight at home.
Conversely, the Stars have struggled away from the American Airlines Center, losing five straight road games. At 3-8-1 Dallas has the worst road record in the NHL. Still, they outplayed the Golden Knights for most of the first matchup, so tonight won’t be easy.
“That was a long time ago,” Golden Knights coach Gerard Gallant said. “They have a talented team. They’re an offensive team that comes hard, and they’ve got top-end players like (Tyler) Seguin and (Jamie) Benn. We are going to play our game the best we can, and we know how Dallas is going to play.”
One key for Vegas will be staying out of the penalty box. The Stars have the sixth-best power play in the league, with a 23.9 success rate.
“We have to make sure they make some mistakes with our defense and get them on the transition game,” Gallant said.
The Golden Knights will be without David Perron, William Carrier and Luca Sbisa, who are all listed as day-to-day. Because of that, Vegas recalled forward Stefan Matteau from the Chicago Wolves, who will be in the lineup tonight.
“He had a real good camp with us, and he’s played really well down there (with the Chicago Wolves),” Gallant said. “He’s a William Carrier type of hockey player with a strong, heavy game and goes hard to the net.”
