The Liberty High football team was sluggish in the first half today at Foothill, and rightfully so.
Many of the Patriots players spent the week mourning the loss of Metro officer Charleston Hartfield, one of the 59 casualties in Sunday’s mass shooting on the Las Vegas Strip. Hartfield is a coach with the Henderson Cowboys youth team, which sends many of its players to Liberty.
“It wasn’t the same energy for us coming out and Foothill was pumped,” Liberty coach Rich Muraco said.
Liberty, the six-time defending Sunrise Regional champions, trailed 9-7 late in the first half. But Crishaun Lappin scored the first of his touchdowns before halftime and the Patriots closed the game with 36 unanswered points, winning 43-9.
“Once we started running the ball, they couldn’t stop our run game,” Muraco said. “We wore them down.”
Kenyon Oblad had three touchdown passes for Liberty, finding Luke Toomalatai, Lehi Ausage and Marquez Powell.
