Sunrise Mountain put it all together when it mattered Thursday night, rallying late for a 26-14 victory against visiting Cheyenne.

The Miners’ flirted with disaster by trailing 14-7 going into the fourth quarter but ultimately avoided a three-way tie for the Class 3A Sunset Region’s final two playoff spots by cutting out their mistakes.

“We basically imploded through the first three quarters — put the ball on the turf, got penalties, couldn’t run the ball,” Sunrise Mountain coach Chris Sawyers said. “We basically just stumbled on ourselves until the fourth quarter.”

Senior Trayvon Ward scored twice in the fourth quarter to right the Miners. Sunrise Mountain’s defense was a bright spot, as it never let Cheyenne run away with a big lead.

Senior Dalwin Spates led the way with four sacks to set up a rematch at Moapa Valley next week in the first week of the playoffs. Moapa Valley edged Sunrise Mountain 13-12 in the first week of the regular season.

“It was a really close game the first time around,” Sawyers said. “Our boys are looking forward to another shot.”
