Virgin Valley was so amped up for senior night that it felt like Del Sol never stood a chance.
The Bulldogs came out flying in the first half of a 52-38 victory over the Dragons — particularly senior running back Jayden Perkins. The Class 3A Player of the Year frontrunner scored six touchdowns on the night — five rushing and one passing.
Perkins hit classmate Cade Anderson on a quarterback throwback for an 80-yard touchdown after having already racked up most of his 256 rushing and receiving yards. And none of his scores may have registered as the highlight of the night.
That belonged to senior Trevon Hollingshead, who returned from tearing his Achilles in June to score a touchdown for a team he was expected to lead.
The victory improved Virgin Valley to 6-3 on the season and 2-1 in Class 3A Sunrise play, making for a three-way tie at the top of the standings. The Bulldogs held the tiebreaker.
“Back-to-back league champions — that was our goal,” Virgin Valley coach Yori Lundvigson said. “We didn’t get there the way we thought we would, but it was a crazy season. It’s great for the community and great for us. It’s been a long time since we went back-to-back.”
Virgin Valley will host Pahrump Valley in the first round of the playoffs next week, while Del Sol — which got 273 yards from senior Taariq Flowers — will take on Desert Pines.
