Show up, ball out

Las Vegas Sun's Ray Brewer and Case Keefer toast all the area teams who defeated out of state competition in week 1, and look forward to an almost-as-loaded week 2 schedule.

The Durango High football team did something tonight that no other program in the area can claim — the Trailblazers won a league game.

Yes, it’s just the first day of September, which is an odd time to open Southwest League play. But Durango made the most of the strange scheduling with an impressive 47-7 win against Bonanza. It was the lone league game in nearly 20 games on tonight’s docket.

Kaden Renshaw passed and rushed for a touchdown, and T.K. Fotu carried the ball eight times for 122 yards. Brayden Stockbauer added two touchdown passes, and Anaya Davidson had three catches for 44 yards and a score.

Justin Johnson added a pair of touchdown runs and Mason Mena caught a touchdown pass.

After a strong first half and not-so-strong second half last week in the season opener against Pahrump, Durango coach Scott Murdock was determined to get his team to play a complete game.

“We had really intense, three-hour practices this week,” Murdock said. “The kids are getting used to playing four quarters of football.”
