Show up, ball out

Las Vegas Sun's Ray Brewer and Case Keefer toast all the area teams who defeated out of state competition in week 1, and look forward to an almost-as-loaded week 2 schedule.

Toward the end of a dismal 2016 season, Boulder City football coach Chris Morelli decided to play his young players to get them experience.

The Eagles finished 1-8, but that game plan is paying off this year.

Boulder City took down Western 29-13 Friday night to move to 2-0 and match their win total from the two previous seasons combined.

“It gives them a lot of confidence,” Morelli said. “This is a young group that we put on to the field last year as sophomores and they’re growing into their positions and growing as football players.”

Junior Jimmy Dunagan was productive for Boulder City on both sides of the ball — rushing 12 times for 62 yards and a score on offense, and racking up nine tackles and a forced fumble on defense.

Shaun Jones completed only 1-of-5 passes with an interception but ran seven times for 31 yards and a pair of scores.

“Jones gives us a running threat at quarterback, so we basically have another tailback back there,” Morelli said. “It’s something that we’ve been missing, and it helps the offense so much.”

Boulder City hosts Needles of the 2A classification next week, with a good chance to move to 3-0.
