Show up, ball out

Las Vegas Sun's Ray Brewer and Case Keefer toast all the area teams who defeated out of state competition in week 1, and look forward to an almost-as-loaded week 2 schedule.

Sophomore Jordan Norwood exploded for 300 rushing yards and three touchdowns Friday night, as Cimarron-Memorial crushed Del Sol 42-19.

“He’s a special kid,” said first-year coach Kory Walker. “He’s always the first guy in the building wanting to watch film. If he keeps up this attitude I think he can play on Saturdays.”

In his first year at the helm, Walker was tasked with bringing a winning tradition back to Spartans football. After only three wins in the previous two seasons, the Spartans were far removed from their days as state champions.

Whatever the competition, it appears Walker has the team on the right track, as Cimarron has started the year with two one-sided victories.

“It’s big for the program,” Walker said. “I can’t say enough about the coaches that I have on the staff. They’ve been grinding it out every day in the film room.”

Quarterback George Tribble threw for 75 yards and passed for a touchdown and ran for another, as the Spartans pulled away in the second half.

“This is a big confidence boost,” Walker said. “We have a new staff with a new philosophy, so to start out 2-0 it really helps get the players to buy in.”
