Show up, ball out

Las Vegas Sun's Ray Brewer and Case Keefer toast all the area teams who defeated out of state competition in week 1, and look forward to an almost-as-loaded week 2 schedule.

For the first time in his coaching career, Moapa Valley coach Brent Lewis left Hurricane, Utah, victorious.

Lewis’ Moapa Valley Pirates downed their frequent out-of-state tormenters, the Hurricane Tigers, 35-24 Friday night behind 358 passing yards and three touchdowns from senior quarterback Daxton Longman.

“It wasn’t perfect,” Moapa Valley coach Brent Lewis said, “but our passing game was on tonight.”

So was the Pirates’ red-zone defense. They were up 21-16 early in the second quarter when the Tigers drove down inside the 5-yard line.

But Moapa Valley was able to force and recover a fumble, before completing a 50-yard pass from Longman to junior Derek Reese on the first play of what turned out to be a scoring drive. Then Moapa Valley repeated the sequence.

The Pirates got a Tigers’ fumble inside their own 10-yard line on their next defensive possession, and then Longman found Reese for an 80-yard completion. Reese caught all three touchdowns, and racked up 227 receiving yards. Junior running back Braeden St. John led the ground attack, tallying 63 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

“It was a back-and-forth game early,” Lewis said. “It felt good to get out of there with a win.”
