Chaparral senior Tyray Collins struck more lethally than the lightning that delayed his team’s rivalry game with Eldorado for more than two hours Friday night.
Collins continued to light up the scoreboard, notching his third straight multi-touchdown game to start the season as the Cowboys fried the Sundevils 28-7. The cleat, a trophy made out of former NFL standout Merlin Olsen’s bronzed shoe, will stay at Chaparral for a third straight year.
Collins scored Chaparral’s final three touchdowns, including a pair of 50-plus yard runs in the second half. His other touchdown came on an 18-yard rush in the second quarter.
In total, he had 176 yards.
The breakout star also led an electric defensive performance. Eldorado reached the red zone on a number of occasions, but came away without points on most of its trips.
The Sundevils were threatening to cut it to a one-score game midway through the third quarter when Collins intercepted a pass to put an end to a long drive. It was his fourth interception of the season.
Chaparral improved to 3-0 for the first time in 14 years, with a home game against Foothill scheduled for next week.
