In a seesaw game that included five lead changes and four different tie scores, it was appropriate Virgin Valley and Sunrise Mountain’s game Saturday night came down to dueling kickers.
Virgin Valley’s Lane Ramos connected on a 26-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to push the Bulldogs ahead 30-27.
On the following drive the defense forced a stop, and all Virgin Valley had to do to seal the win was take a knee and watch the clock tick down. But the Bulldogs fumbled the snap and Sunrise Mountain took over with one last chance.
That set up a 36-yard attempt for Jason Rodriguez, but he missed the kick just left of the upright.
The Bulldogs and Miners traded scores throughout the game, with no team leading by more than seven points at any point. Sunrise Mountain led 13-7 at halftime but Virgin Valley was resilient.
With the win the Bulldogs improved to 3-2 on the season.
“It was an emotional back and forth game,” coach Yori Ludvigson said. “I was just so proud of our kids. I just think we played every snap.”
