Junior running back Wyatt Delano ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns to lead Virgin Valley to a 28-20 win over Clark to open the season Friday night in Mesquite.

“He runs hard,” Virgin Valley coach Matt Woods said. “He’s a beast. He runs some people over. If you’re going to tackle him, you better strap your shoulder pads tight because he looks for contact.”

Virgin Valley burst out to an early 28-8 lead, but Clark fought back into contention late.

“It got exciting at the end,” Woods said. "We were up big at one point and then we relaxed. We had a couple guys come out and let them back into the game. It was definitely more exciting than it should have been.”

Bulldogs junior quarterback Meb Hollingshead threw for 100 yards and a touchdown to David-Shane Carson, and running back Tanner Fielding pitched in nearly 100 yards and another score on the ground.

The win sets Virgin Valley off on the right foot and redeems the Bulldogs of a 49-26 loss to Clark last season.

“It gives us a ton of momentum,” Woods said. “The best part for me was there was never any doubt by our kids that we were going to win, even going back to April.”

Virgin Valley heads on the road next Friday to face Pahrump Valley, while Clark will host Basic.
