A Las Vegas clothing store security guard who was wounded by police after allegedly opening fire with a handgun during a busy shopping weekend remains hospitalized and unable to make court appearances.

A Las Vegas judge on Friday reset an initial appearance to next Tuesday for 37-year-old Mohamed Abdalla Mahmoud after a court-appointed lawyer said he was still being treated at University Medical Center.

Deputy Public Defender Zohra Bakhtary says Mahmoud is expected to recover.

Mahmoud faces multiple felony attempted murder, assault and weapon charges.

No one else was hit by gunfire, but police say Mahmoud unleashed 16 shots after an argument with the store manager about a misplaced shopping cart Aug. 11 at the Ross Dress For Less store.

Police say Officer Bryon Bunitsky wounded Mahmoud.
