Golden Knights’ netminder Marc-Andre Fleury is the sixth-best goaltender in the NHL, according to the NHL Network's countdown show.
Top 10 Goalies Right Now is part of a series of shows done by the network where analysts Tony Luftman, 11-year NHL veteran Mike Johnson and Brian Boucher rank the top players at each position.
Fleury came in at No. 6, one spot ahead of the Nashville Predators’ Vezina Trophy-winning goalie Pekka Rinne, and one behind Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings. It’s the first time Fleury has made the list since he was ranked ninth in 2016.
The rankings were “based on player performance over the past several seasons, with an emphasis on the 2017-2018 season. The ranking also weighted players’ projected performance in the 2018-2019 season, taking into account those returning from injury and expectant breakout seasons from young players.”
Fleury, 33, posted career highs in save percentage (.927) and goals against average (2.24) last season with Vegas. He was even better in the postseason, posting a career-high four shutouts and leading the Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Final.
“When you think about the way goaltenders play today, they’re not just traditional blockers,” Boucher said on the show. “Marc-Andre Fleury, when he came in out of junior (hockey), he was a guy that was awfully active in the crease. (We) wondered if he’d be able to continue to play that way and not get injured. He’s proven to be one of the very best over time. I think he’s a sure-shot Hall of Famer. He had a fantastic year, let’s see if he can back it up as the clock continues to tick on his age.”
Fleury signed a three-year, $21 million extension this offseason that will keep him in Las Vegas through the 2021-22 season.
