Argument outside Las Vegas restaurant turns deadly

Tue, Aug 28, 2018 (11:15 p.m.)

An argument between two men Tuesday night outside an east valley restaurant turned physical and then deadly when one of the men involved pulled out a gun and opened fire, according to Metro Police.

A passerby followed the possible suspect, and North Las Vegas Police took him into custody at a nearby neighborhood shortly after, said Lt. Ray Spencer in an online briefing.

Investigators were trying to confirm the detained man's involvement in the shooting, which was reported in a retail center in the 1500 block of North Eastern Avenue, near Owens Avenue, Spencer said late Tuesday.

The argument may have stemmed from money or drugs, Spencer said.

Shortly before 8 p.m., multiple witnesses saw the two men argue before a physical fight broke out, Spencer said. Sometime after, the suspect pulled out a gun and pumped several rounds.

Medics declared the victim dead at the scene, Spencer said.

A motorist in the area saw a man running away, called 911, and followed him to a nearby North Las Vegas neighborhood where officers, with the help of a Metro helicopter, tracked him down and put him in handcuffs without further incident, Spencer said.

The motorist kept such a distance that the man didn’t appear to know he was being followed, Spencer said.

Spencer reminded persons in the community to “be a good witness,” but “don’t get involved where you would put yourself in danger.”

The investigation was ongoing late Tuesday.
