With work on the future Las Vegas home of the Raiders in full swing, the team’s most iconic figure already has a street named after him.
Former coach and owner Al Davis has his name bestowed on a small stretch of road surrounding the stadium, Al Davis Way. The portion of the new road adjoins Aldebaran Avenue, which was realigned by construction on the site.
Al Davis Way runs parallel with Hacienda Avenue, and the new portion of Aldebaran runs north and south from Hacienda Road, between Dean Martin Drive and Polaris Avenue.
The stadium’s listed address also changed from 5617 Dean Martin Dr. to 3333 Al Davis Way. As of Monday night, signs had not been installed to reflect Al Davis Way, and a county official was unsure when that would take place.
First as a coach, and then as an owner and managing general partner of the Raiders, Davis became the symbol of the franchise. He established the Raiders as a successful franchise in Oakland, sued the NFL in the early 1980s in order to move the team to Los Angeles, and then after 13 seasons moved the team back to Oakland.
Mark Davis, the son of Al, inherited principal ownership of the franchise after his father died in 2011.
Once complete in 2020, the $1.84 billion, 65,000-seat domed stadium will be home to the Raiders and UNLV football.
