With a young child in the backseat of his car early Tuesday, a man accused of driving impaired plowed into a stopped vehicle on the recently-opened Interstate 11, killing two people and injuring a third, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Officials today identified the suspect as Antonio Romualdo-Macedo of New Mexico. He is facing various counts of DUI and child endangerment.

Troopers responded to the highway, an 11-mile stretch near Boulder City, about 2:15 a.m.

Romualdo-Macedo, 39, was heading south in a 2014 BMW 355 when he veered off his travel lane and rammed into a Honda Prelude that was stopped on the right shoulder, the patrol said.

Occupants of the Honda — Jennifer Taylor, a 49-year-old Henderson resident and a male passenger — died at the scene, while a second passenger was hospitalized with injuries not deemed life-threatening, the patrol said.

Romualdo-Macedo, and the 4-year-old child, who was “properly restrained” in the BMW, were taken to University Medical Center, the patrol said.

Romualdo-Macedo is being held without bond at the Clark County Detention Center on counts of DUI resulting in death, DUI with substantial bodily harm, child endangerment and failure to drive within a marked travel lane.

He will next appear in court Thursday morning.
