Senior running back Thorsten Balmer ran for 232 yards and two touchdowns to lead Boulder City to its first win of the season, 23-8 over Democracy Prep.
Balmer opened the scoring with a 58-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and scored again in the second quarter to stretch the Eagles' lead to 17-0 at halftime.
“Going into this year we knew he’d be a horse,” Boulder City coach Chris Morelli said. “He’s a kid that just grinds day in and day out. He spent the offseason in the weight room getting ready to carry the ball 20-plus times a game.”
The Boulder City defense, led by Balmer and Jimmy Dunagan, held the Democracy Prep offense in check throughout the game. Gino Carroll sacked Blue Knights' quarterback Micah Gayman in his own end zone for a safety in the second quarter.
The win brings Boulder City’s record to 1-1 on the season. The Eagles will host Pahrump Valley next week.
“Right now every game is just about cleaning stuff up and getting better,” Morelli said. “We want to clean stuff up before we get into league play because our goal is to make the playoffs.”
