Coronado has improved drastically through each of the first three weeks of the high school football season, with Friday night’s 36-14 victory over host Spring Valley serving as the Cougars’ finest effort yet.
The Cougars have begun to click with coach Terry Riddle’s new offense, and used the newfound comfort to engineer several long drives in the win over the Grizzlies.
“Something happened where they’ve just finally bought in,” Riddle said. “It’s a system, and they’re getting used to it.”
Running backs Semaj Bolin and Andrew Montez each scored twice for the Cougars, who trailed 7-6 in the opening minute but hardly ever again. Coronado had a commanding first drive, but allowed Spring Valley to return the ensuing kickoff.
The special teams’ blunder was one of the only letdowns of the night for Coronado, as the defense was consistently smothering and the offense rarely faltered. And senior kicker Gavin Wale also joined in on the fun, nailing a 48-yard field goal before halftime.
“Everything went really well,” Riddle said.
