The Desert Oasis football team entered the season on a 13-game losing streak. But, here on the last day of August, the Diamondbacks have a 3-0 record in 2018 and are full of confidence.

It won convincingly for the third straight week tonight, using about 175 rushing yards and four touchdowns from junior Christian Vaughn in a 62-7 victory against host Western.

Desert Oasis also has wins against Del Sol and Valley, meaning their victories haven’t exactly come against powerhouses. But they are victories, nonetheless.

And after a winless 2017, that’s a gigantic step in the right direction.

“We found the schedule to allow the kids to get some confidence,” Desert Oasis coach Mike Ovens said. “We needed the kids to see they could win. Little by little, they are starting to believe.”

The schedule will get tougher next month when Southwest League play begins, when they will have a battle to reach the playoffs against the likes of Bishop Gorman, Sierra Vista and Durango.

“But we aren’t trying to beat the teams, yet. We just needed the kids to get some confidence,” Ovens said.

Colton Zobrist had a touchdown pass to Laakea Mulivai, and

Alvin Pomare and Alexander Simi added rushing touchdowns.
