The Bishop Gorman High football team hasn’t been in a spot like this in many seasons.

The Gaels, after losing 42-0 last week to Mater Dei, have something to prove. Players are determined to make amends for the humbling defeat.

They’ll get their chance tonight at Centennial of Peoria, Ariz., looking to avoid losing consecutive games for the first time since 2005.

That’s the beauty of the Gorman schedule, as it opens with four games against notable out-of-state competition. One loss won’t define the season because there is another quality opponent seven days later.

Gorman isn’t the only team looking to rebound.

Faith Lutheran, which hosts Bakersfield Christian of California, was also shut out last week in dropping its opener against Valor Christian of Colorado.

Arbor View and Liberty, the consensus second and third best teams in Las Vegas, are each playing for another victory against a national opponent. Arbor View, fresh off victories against a pair of California opponents, hosts Hamilton High of Arizona. Liberty takes on visiting Lone Peak of Utah one week after winning at Arizona power Saguaro.

Other local teams are playing regional opponents — Shadow Ridge hosting Snow Canyon of Utah, and Canyon Springs traveling to Orem of Utah.

In local play, Sierra Vista plays at Green Valley in a battle on top 10 teams, and respected programs Palo Verde and Foothill square off.
