Services to be held this week for Terrible Herbst founder

Jerry Herbst, founder of the Terrible Herbst convenience store chain, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018, at age 80. Herbst was also an avid race fan and philanthropist.

Funeral services are scheduled this week for the founder and chairman of Terrible Herbst, Inc.

Jerry Herbst died Nov. 27 at his Las Vegas home. He was 80.

Herbst in 1959 founded the company that today consists of more than 160 convenience stores and gas stations known for their huge American flags and mustachioed caricature logo.

Passionate about racing, Herbst was inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame and the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame.

A funeral is scheduled Tuesday at the Christ Church Episcopal on Maryland Parkway in Las Vegas. A public memorial service for Herbst's employees, business partners and others is scheduled Thursday at the company's employment center on Dewey Drive.

Herbst and his wife raised three children.
