Passerby alerts sleeping residents to house fire

Tue, Dec 4, 2018 (11:52 a.m.)

Two people who were sleeping when their house caught fire escaped after a passerby banged on the door to warn them, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials said.

Nobody was injured, officials said.

The fire was reported about 4:30 a.m. today in the 1400 block of B Street. Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames and smoke coming from the doors and windows of the single-story house, officials said.

Crews brought the fire under control in less than 5 minutes, but the house sustained about $75,000 in damage, officials said. No other nearby homes were affected, officials said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Though awoken by the pounding on the door, the occupants said smoke alarms in the house worked, according to the fire department.

A total of four people — two were not home at the time — were displaced by the fire and were being assisted by the American Red Cross, officials said.
