The Desert Pines basketball team has a new challenge this season. It’s a challenge coach Mike Uzan has long wanted.

The Jaguars, the two-time defending 3A state champions, were realigned to the large-school classification this season. That means competing against the likes of Bishop Gorman, Clark and Coronado — teams Uzan feels his is just as talented as — for a championship.

The Jags expect strong backcourt play with freshman Milos Uzan and junior AJ Pullens. Sophomore Dayshawn Wiley averaged 12 points per game last season.

Desert Pines has already proved itself in the new class, winning its initial three games.
